I have been wanting to get a little more daring with my photography now that I feel more confident in my photography.. I believe that certain life events require a certain level of quality in photography. I didn’t want to go into a birth as an amateur and deliver less than lovely images for the family, so when Courtney posted on Instagram that she was needing a photographer for her new addition and was considering also having someone photographer her delivery I jumped on it, and boy am I glad I did! Courtney and I texted back and forth a little bit to get a good idea of what exactly she was looking for and became great friends through those messages. We decided to meet up for doughnuts to finalize the details and talk about what she wanted for that day.. That is also where I met her darling daughter that would later be meeting her brother for the first time in front of my camera lens!
Courtney was induced at 2:30am and she and I texted back and forth all day with status updates and words of encouragement. She sent me a message at around 7:30pm saying it was go time! I made my way to the hospital and found out one of my best friends was one of the nurses on the delivery floor that evening! Such a calming thing to know since this was uncharted territory for me. Turned out we still had about an hour or so of labor before she could start to push so I took some shots of the room and the laboring until it was time to push. She was so calm the whole time and really only pushed for about 15 minutes total! Baby James came into the world surrounded by the best people!
The next day I returned to the hospital to photograph Courtneys daughter meeting her brother! Mia was SO excited.. the nurses gave her a hospital bracelet that said big sister on it and she was anxious to hold her baby brother.. she was so soft with him and despite her anxiousness to hold him she remained calm and eager 🙂
The whole experience changed me in the best way. It introduced me to the miracle of life. I got to experience on of the most incredible things in the world and seeing the look on their faces every time they looked at this little guy is pure magic. I am SO glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and accepted this families challenge. I also went to their home to take newborn photos as well and those went just as well as everything else! He slept like an angel and was just adorable.
Congratulations Brinkerhoff family and thank you so much for letting me be a part of this with you!
